This workshop is designed for writers who find single-suspect, linear plots too straightforward. We focus on complexity that remains fair to the reader.
Layered timelines and what they cost you
Non-linear detective fiction is harder than it looks. Shifting between timelines creates atmosphere but can obscure causality in ways that feel like cheating rather than craft. We examine published examples - including novels that failed this test - and identify the specific techniques that keep complex structures readable.
Unreliable narration in detective fiction
An unreliable narrator in a mystery is a high-risk technique. Done poorly, it invalidates the reader's effort. Done well, it produces the genre's most memorable moments. We work through the conditions under which it earns its place.
Complexity without clarity is just confusion dressed up as sophistication.
Each participant brings a work-in-progress or detailed outline. Feedback sessions are small-group discussions with written notes from the facilitator. Expect honest assessment of where your plot logic breaks down.
